April 23 '07: Valdosta State University in Georgia has announced a new campus-wide emergency alert system to help inform faculty and students at the onset of an emergency, a press release from the school read. The VSU Campus Alert system would rely on text and phone messaging using an automated system using the Connect-ED communications service.
The VSU announcement came late last week after 32 people were killed at Virginia Tech when an armed student shot and killed his fellow students. Faculty and security at VT said later that locking down the campus and spreading the vital safety information to students was hampered when email, text and phone lines were overrun with demand. The VSU alert system will be capable of sending specialized messages via text, phone and email. The system will also be able "to schedule, send and track" those messages. Students and faculty will have to enter their information into the system in order to receive the messages. The messaging service will follow students even when not on campus, and will be used only for school-related news and information.
