May 15 '07: World mayors gathered in New York City for a climate change conference focusing on ways that world's largest cities could work to prepare and respond to rising global temperatures, the Associated Press reported. The conference was hosted by NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg.
The C40 Large Cities Climate Summit was attended by more than 30 international cities including Addis Adaba, New York, London and Sao Paulo.During the conference, London Mayor Ken Livingston said "It is in the cities that the battle to tackle climate change will be won or lost." The conference also included members of the private sector who were invited to participate to bolster public/private partnerships to help identify and respond to climate challenges, the AP continued. Organizers told the AP they hoped the conference will help to push businesses and governments to "go green - through innovative construction, transportation alternatives and other environmental changes," and to make those moves profitable and sustainable, the AP concluded.
