WalMart to help Red Cross in Canada with disaster response funding

November 9 '07: A press release from Wal-Mart and SAM's Albums in Canada have announced a new program to help the Red Cross with "raising much-needed funds for Canadian Red Cross disaster preparedness and response beginning August 9." The total campaign will last until September 2 and is expected to raise about $1 million in funds.
Details of the program included the companies "inviting customers to donate a loonie (Canadian dollar coin) at the cash registers ... Funds raised during this campaign stay within local communities, and will help to provide urgently needed relief items during disasters and beyond.""Additionally," the press release continued, "Wal-Mart's sponsorship helps Canadian Red Cross keep stockpiles of emergency supplies such as blankets and hygiene kits ... Wal-Mart, together with its customers and suppliers, has raised and contributed a significant portion of funding that enables Red Cross to build up its local disaster support system."
