February 6 '08: A press release announced by the American Society of Civil Engineers has outlined a new partnership with the International Association of Emergency Managers through a memorandum of cooperation to address the nation's infrastructure security challenges in light of last year's I-35W bridge collapse in Minneapolis which killed thirteen people.
"The new agreement establishes a relationship designed to promote awareness of the state of our nation's critical infrastructure, and to encourage the involvement of the engineering community in supporting emergency managers," the press release announced. IAEM Exec. Dir. Elizabeth B. Armstrong said "Our goals make this partnership a natural fit in our efforts to continually improve public safety."Working together, the organizations will "enhance disaster management efforts at the local, state, federal and international levels, as well as to ensure the continued participation of all agencies and departments involved in emergency management," the release continued to read. "In addition, both organizations recognize the need for additional funding and increased emphasis on coordination of all aspects of emergency management worldwide."
